I believe we should pay attention to the great uncertainties of Einstein and De Broglie, and to the lesser known voices of the younger physicists of all countries, who tell us that formulas no longer suffice; that there must be a reality beyond our senses and beyond our spirit, and that if science hopes to approach it, it may be that special requirements are imposed which lead beyond formulas. Delineating these requirements is difficult and dangerous. And it is a thankless task to set them out in detail, for one obviously risks the arbitrary. But faced with what seems to be an excess of neopositive pragmatism, it is essential that these requirements are formulated, at least as hypotheses to put to the test.
